The following report written by Alan Denman, our Scottish Cycling Regional Development Coach will appear on the Scottish Cycling web-site soon:
Round 4 of the Dumfries and Galloway MTB race series was held on Thursday 5th August. Beautiful weather greeted the 26 youngsters, with the only problem being the midges. Andrew Taylor and Rik Alsopp from the Root Rats club designed a superb course for the event, which included some lovely flowing single track, some tricky technical sections, a killer climb and of course lots of rooty sections.
The under 8’s & 10’s used a slightly shorter course and with entry numbers high separate races were held for each age group. In the under 8’s race the promoting club’s rider Kyle Colchester lost his 100% record and was beaten into second place by Wallace Warrior visiting rider Callum Reid. Emily Young won the under 8’s girls race closely followed by Trinity Coombs.
The Under 10’s race continued to be a closely fought battle with The Root Rats Fergus Hiddleston just getting the better of William McCartney from the Stepping Stanes club this time. Polly Henderson continued her 100% record of wins in the girls race.
The under 12’s, 14’s, 16’s & 18’s races on the longer circuit. Jamie Willoughby just came out on top after a hard fought battle with Adam Burgoyne, while G & G sponsored rider Lizzie McCreadie from Stepping Stanes notched up another win in the girls event. The under 14’s event was won by rapidly improving Rian Hill, the under 16’s by Jordan Crawford and the under 18’s by Scott Ridge from Ayr.
The overall series is now becoming very close and with only one round remaining, a mini downhill race at Mabie Forest on Thursday 2nd September, it promises to be an exciting climax to the series. If you fancy getting involved with a cycling club in the D&G area, the Drumlanrig Root Rats meet on a Monday evening at Drumlanrig Castle, 5pm for the youngsters/beginners group and 7pm for the more experienced group and the Stepping Stanes club meet on a Thursday evening at 6.45pm at Heath Hall forest, Dumfries, next to the aviation museum.
